Baseball: Pittsburgh Pirates Call Up Top Prospect

Nick Gonzales Joins Team as Second Former First-Round Pick

Gonzales Ranked as Pirates' Third-Best Prospect

Miami, FL – The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their second call-up of the season from their pool of former first-round draft picks, selecting shortstop Nick Gonzales on Friday.

Entering the season, Baseball America ranked Gonzales as the Pirates' No. 3 prospect. The 23-year-old has been tearing it up in the minor leagues this season, batting .333 with six home runs and 30 RBIs in 60 games at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Gonzales, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, is known for his exceptional bat-to-ball skills and his ability to draw walks. He also has good speed and can play solid defense.

The Pirates have been struggling this season, currently sitting at 24-42 and in last place in the NL Central. The hope is that Gonzales can provide a spark to the offense and help the team turn things around.

Gonzales is the second former first-round pick to be called up by the Pirates this season, joining outfielder Matt Gorski, who was selected 27th overall in the 2021 MLB Draft.
